City-tour in Jinja

Er komen regelmatig touristen naar Jinja, veelal om te raften op de Nijl en een dagje naar Jinja.
Vele van hen blijven hangen in de mainstreet en bezoeken de hippe koffiebars om te internetten en
westers te eten. Ze zien nauwelijks het ‘Afrikaanse leven’.
Er is zoveel meer in Jinja wat de moeite waard is en kennis te maken met delokale kleuren, geuren , geluiden
en vooral de locale mensen. Tijdens de ‘CITY TOUR’ neemt een gids ( voormalig straatjongen of meisje)
je mee ‘down town’ waar je de locale smederijen bezoekt. Waar van oude olievaten weer schalen worden
gemaakt of van oude tomatenpuree blikjes olielampjes. Waar mannen 10 uur lang het vuur aan houden met
een blaasbalg en zo hun dagelijks potje verdienen. Dit alles onder een waar orkest van tikkende hamers tegen
oud ijzer. Vervolgens bezoeken we verschillende werkplaatsen van timmerlui en garages waar onmogelijke
autowrakken weer rijdend worden gemaakt. De markt voor de locale mensen met allerlei local voedsel, kruiden
en beesten. Schoenmakers die uit ouden autobanden sandalen toveren. Locale dokters met hun kruiden, fetisjen
en duistere kamertjes waar een  pijp gerookt wordt in de hoop op een goed man.
Dan een hapje eten in een locale kiosk en tijdens het eten goed om je heen kijken wat er allemaal gebeurt.
Daarna in de wirwar van de gangetjes in de centrale markt je laten overvallen door alles wat er te koop is en
de vriendelijkheid en nieuwsgierigheid van de locale verkopers en verkoopsters.

De tour neemt ongeveer 2 uur in beslag en hier voor zijn de kosten 10.000/ush per persoon.
De gids krijgt hier van 5.000/ush en het overige geld wordt besteed aan de rehabilitatie van straat jeugd.

De CITY TOUR kan uitgebreid worden met een bezoek aan een van de slums van Jinja, waar Bulikimu KisoBoka,
diverse projecten heeft.

Ook fietsen kunt huren om op eigen gelegenheid de stad te verkennen.
In de loop van de komende maanden zal het KisoBOKa Centrum in het programma worden opgenomen, waar
Kookworkshops gegeven worden en workshops dans en muziek.

There are regular tourists to Jinja, mostly to go for rafting on the Nile, and a day trip to Jinja-Town.
Many of them linger in the main street and visit the trendy coffee bars to the Internet and to eat western-food.  They hardly see the ‘ African life.
There is so much more in Jinja which is worth dealing with the local colors, smells, sounds knowledge
and in particular the local people . During the ‘CITY TOUR’ a guide (former street boy or girl) takes you, “down town “where you visit the local forges. Where scales are made from old oil drums or oil lamps from old tomato tins. Where men 10 hours the fire with bellows and earn their daily game . All this under a real orchestra of hammers ticking against old iron. Then we visit different workshops of carpenters and garages where impossible vehicles are made . We visit the market for local people with all kinds of local food, spices and beasts. Shoemakers who are making magic sandals from old car tires. Local doctors with their herbs, fetishes and dark rooms where a pipe smoking in the hope of a good husband .
Then a bite to eat in a local kiosk and while eating a good look around and see what is happening.
Then in the maze of corridors in the central market let you overwhelmed by all there is for sale and
the friendliness and curiosity of the local salesmen and saleswomen .

The tour takes about 2 hours and here is the costs 10.000/ush per person.
The guide gets here 5.000/ush and the rest of the money is spent on the rehabilitation of street youth.

The CITY TOUR can be extended with a visit to one of the slums of Jinja, where Bulikimu KisoBOKa has various projects .

In the short term, these districts can also be visited by BIKE TOURS, in collaboration with Coop Africa (www.coop – africa.org) , where you  bicycles can be rented to explore the city on your own.
Over the coming months KisoBOKa Centre will be included in the program where cooking workshops are given and workshops dance and music.
